In April 2018 UUCA members voted to support the 8th Principle to “accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” This means we have a commitment to act. Last week I reported that the Board has adopted the use of an 8th Principle Accountability Checklist and that they encourage other groups to develop a similar list. Click (HERE) to view the Board’s checklist. In support of our commitment to act, the Building Expansion Exploratory Committee (BEEC2) is seeking to work with contractors and subcontractors of color.
Historically, the Green Book was originated and published by New York City mailman, Victor Hugo Green, in 1936 to publicize businesses friendly to African Americans. Because open discrimination and hostility were practiced, the Negro Motorist Green-Book identified at first just the New York area but eventually North American businesses that would serve and accommodate African Americans. It was published annually until 1966.
I am now using this Arundel Green Book to identify stores, restaurants, and services that I use. I feel this is one step I can take to live my commitment to our 8th Principle. I hope others will join me.
