Afghan Family Update
Hamid, the father of the family, has been working for the last six months at a job in his professional field, mapping engineering. Unfortunately, his job involves outdoor surveying which is hard on his legs and feet, which had been broken as he jumped out of a third-story window in Afghanistan, escaping a terrorist attack. He will need special shoes, and perhaps additional orthopedic surgery, in order to continue.
His wife, Roya, is studying English and continues as a stay-at-home parent. She is pregnant and is due around mid-September. She would like to pursue an at-home job after her English improves.
The two boys, one in high school and the other in middle school are reportedly doing well, while their third, a three-year-old sister, remains home.
They have a car that was donated to them. They are responsible for the insurance.
The rent for their apartment will be rising in June by 15%. The family is trying to work that into their budget with all their other expenses. These additional expenses far exceed their income currently and we are trying to assist them in budgeting and support. With dental issues for both adults, possible orthopedic surgery for Hamid’s legs, special shoes, increased rent, insurance payments, and pregnancy issues, we (UUCA and Friends Meeting) probably will be helping them longer than the originally-planned first year, which ends in May. We are still covering a major part of their rent and will need to continue to do so for several months, along with other emergency expenses. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please send it to UUCA: Refugee Resettlement Assistance Fund. You may also send a check to UUCA, 333 Dubois Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401. Please write in the memo that it is for the Refugee Resettlement Assistance Fund.
Thank you.
