HURRAY!
Part 3: Proposed Changes to
Article II of the UUA Bylaws
By Heather Millar, May 4, 2023
Saturday, I completed a Zoom session on the proposed reimagining of Article II of the UUA bylaws. I learned some astounding things that I will share in future articles and during an After Hour session on Zoom this Sunday, May 7. It is the same as for the service; just stay on Zoom after the service or use the above link.
One important highlight of the Saturday presentation is we are NOT eliminating the 8th Principle or the other seven principles. We are reimagining Article II, how our core values are expressed. Our UUCA congregation voted to adopt the 8th Principle. That was a congregational action and remains part of our foundation. Approval of a revision to the UUA’s bylaws does not erase or replace our continued commitment to “accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” Hallelujah!
Below are important links to materials and virtual gatherings that will further inform you about the proposed revision of Article II.
- This first link is to a series of videos. Especially important is a conversation between Paula Cole Jones and Satya Mamdani; both members of the Article II Study Commission.
- In a section devoted to Article II and the 8th Principle, it is important to notice the comments in blue of Satya Mamdani, one of two teenage members of the Article II Study Commission.
- Do we trust the work of those on the commission? In addition to all the studies they have done, become familiar with who they are and what they bring to the table using this link.
- Consider the complete Article II Study Commission Report 2021-2023.
