Refugee Family Progress Update

Our Afghan refugee family is making great progress.  Together with the Annapolis Friends Meeting, we have been assisting a refugee family for the past six months.  We have been covering their rent and utilities payments and are responsible to them and to the placing agency, Lutheran Social Services, to continue that assistance for about six more months, as they become established.  The father of the family now has a job in his professional field, mapping engineering, and is currently on probationary status.  We are renting a car for him during this period, while we repair a donated used car and make it ready for offering.  We are overseeing some ongoing dental needs that he has.

The mother of the household, who was trained and certified in Afghanistan as an attorney, is taking multiple English language classes with the community college and the literacy council.  She has made some child-sitting arrangements for her three-year-old daughter with some of her Afghani neighbors.

Their two sons are active in their respective middle and high schools.  The middle school son is fortunate to have a Dari (their native language) speaking counselor, who is helping him.

We introduced them to Thanksgiving with a feast held at the Friends Meeting House the day after Thanksgiving.
