The Annapolis Opera presents a world premiere stage reading of a new opera, Sunder.

Saturday, August 28th at 7:30 pm at Maryland Hall

The Annapolis Opera will present a world premiere stage reading of a new opera, Sunder. Co-produced with the University of Maryland School of Music’s Maryland Opera Studio, Sunder shares a story about empathy, and the different ways people use their voice, power, and privilege to fight for what they believe in. This impactful work was created by Nailah Nombeko and Alicia Haymer, two talented and inspiring young women of color, who bring this socially important discussion to our community. Immediately following the performance there will be a panel discussion with the artists moderated by Mr. Chris Haley.

In addition to the live performance, there is a FREE behind-the-scenes film. This preview film gives a backstage look into last spring’s opera rehearsal process in preparation for the live performance. The film can be viewed virtually via the Annapolis Opera website beginning August 27 through September 4, 2021.

Summary: Heartfelt chants ring out in a southern small town that’s had enough of the police criminalizing the poor. White protestors have occupied space downtown in the People’s Plaza, fighting for the freedom of homeless Black people who have been arrested for petty crimes, and given astronomical bail. Turmoil threatens to come between two close friends at the helm of the movement, as the protestors decide if they should remain peaceful, or amp up their efforts with force. In the midst is a Black police officer, who struggles to find his authenticity in a hotbed of justice, race, and morality. What will become of a movement, once mighty, that loses its way because of a need for power?

Tickets for the performance and the film can be found at www.annapolisopera.org.
